Annotated paper:Wahl S, et al. "A local, periactive zone endocytic machinery at photoreceptor synapses in close vicinity to synaptic ribbons" J Neurosci. 2013 Jun 19;33(25):10278-300 PMID:23785143
Figure(s):fig 10, fig 11, fig 12
Annotation description:The authors use super resolution structured illumination microscopy (fig 10 and 11) to localize clathrin-hevay chain (CHC) to the area surrounding both the bassoon-labeled active zone and the RIBEYE-immunolabeled synaptic ribbon in mouse photoreceptor synapses. The authors use multiple well-characterized antibodies against CHC for these localization studies. In fig 12 they use immunogold labelling to reveal CHC localization to the plasma membrane in close proximity to the synaptic ribbon). The immunogold labeling experiments confirm the previously shown immunofluorescence labeling data and demonstrate the enrichment of CHC-V1 in the periactive zone of the photoreceptor ribbon synapse.

- The "extrinsic" membrane association is derived from the absense of TM or lipid anchors and the known interaction of clathrin to transmembrane cargo adapter molecules (not shown in this paper).

- For PMID:23785143 I allow annotation to term 'presynaptic endocytic zone' because the authors claim this as an experimental finding. The title states "A local, periactive zone endocytic machinery at photoreceptor synapses in close vicinity to synaptic ribbons"
- I removed the reference to "extrinsic" membrane association since this interaction might be indirect.
