Annotated paper:Zhang Y, et al. "Anatomical evidence for a non-synaptic influence of the K+ -dependent Na+/Ca2+ -exchanger, NCKX2, on hippocampal plasticity" Neuroscience. 2015 Dec 3;310:372-88 PMID:26410028
Figure(s):Figure 13, 14
Annotation description:Figure 13, 14: After a series of low-resolution confocal imaging, authors used immunogold EM to confirm NCKX2 (SLC24A2) localization to the pre- and post-synapse. Localization to synaptic terminals was more prominent than localization to dendritic spines, authors note "Only a minority of gold particles were located on spines". Knockout mice were used as controls.

Additional literature:"The line profiles of NCKX2 (green) and FLAG-KIF21A (red) fluorescence intensities as well as the PDM image demonstrate that the NCKX2/FLAG-KIF21A complexes are localized in puncta along the axon fiber and in the axon terminal (Fig. 2G)." @ PMID:22442075
