Annotation description:Immunogold particles were frequently associated with asymmetric synapses (Figure 1B). Of interest, CD44 labeling in the CA3 stratum radiatum was detected at both presynaptic and postsynaptic sites. The quantitative analysis of the number of gold particles in dendritic spines and axonal boutons confirmed a significant association between gold particles and these compartments compared with an expected random distribution (dendritic spines: x^2 = 1140.37, p < 0.00001; axonal boutons: x^2 = 217.739, p < 0.00001).

Specificity of the antibody (polyclonal sheep IgG; R&D Systems) has been tested in PMID 25300795 (Skupien et al., 2014, JCS 127:5038; Fig. 2) by shRNA knock down.
