Ontology domain:Cellular Component
SynGO term:synapse (GO:0045202)
Synapse type(s):cerebral cortex, glutamatergic
Annotated paper:Smalla KH, et al. "A comparison of the synaptic proteome in human chronic schizophrenia and rat ketamine psychosis suggest that prohibitin is involved in the synaptic pathology of schizophrenia" Mol Psychiatry. 2008 Sep;13(9):878-96 PMID:18504422

Annotation description:Prohibitin immunoreactivity colocalizes with presynaptic (Bassoon) and postsynaptic (Shank 3) marker proteins in cortical primary cultures.

12/01/2021 Dnyanada: The additional literature (PMID: 23622064) identifies prohibitin in presynaptic active zone fraction. The confocal images used in the annotated paper do not have the resolution to discriminate between pre- and postsynaptic localisation. Due to a lack of strong experimental evidence in favour of either the presynapse or postsynapse, the SynGO term "synapse" was used.

Prohibitin (as well as Prohibitin-2) has no detectable transmembrane domain, however, it copurifies with protein fractions highly enriched in docked synaptic vesicles. @ PMID:23622064
