Annotation description:Using a validated antibody this paper describes that cortactin, a protein implicated in actin nucleation and branching, is expressed in hippocampal CA1 neurons and is enriched in dendritic spines. Here it concentrates in the core of the spine. Together with evidence that cortactin binds F-actin through its amino-terminal acidic region (see e.g. PMID 11018051) and that removal of this domain abrogates spine targeting (PMID 14684878), suggests that cortactin is enriched in spines by binding to F-actin.
