Annotation description: | Antibody was directed against: "Subunit-specific antibodies to purified human erythroid β-spectrin (βIΣ1), and bovine brain α-fodrin (αIIΣ*) and β-fodrin (βIIΣ*) were generated in rabbits as described [57]." Fig.7: "Distribution of β-spectrin, β-fodrin and α-fodrin in spines" - "We chose CaMKII as the synaptic marker, as it was widespread but concentrated in spines (Fig. 7A',B',C'). We found that α-fodrin (Fig. 7A,A') and β-spectrin (Fig. 7B,B'), but not β-fodrin (Fig. 7C,C'), were often present in structures resembling spines. In overlaid images, however, α-fodrin appeared to be limited to the necks of spines and largely excluded from the heads, where CaMKII was relatively concentrated (Fig. 7A,A', insert in color image). This was not the case for β-spectrin, which was present in significant amounts in the spine heads. These results suggest that some synapses in cultured hippocampal neurons, like some regions of the soma and proximal dendrites (Fig. 6C,C'), contain β-spectrin without appreciable amounts of α-fodrin." |
