Summary: the authors show expression of NRG1 in pontine nuclei (presynaptic neurons) and cerebellar granule cells (postsynaptic neurons). Immuno-EM shows NRG1 localization in pre-and postsynaptic elements located in the granular layer of the cerebellum (has mossy fiber/granule cell synapses). Sometimes gold particles are found in the synaptic cleft. Fig.3 NRG1 is shown to possess homophilic adhesive properties. The model is that some NRG1 is located at the pre- and postsynaptic specialization membrane and has a function in membrane adhesion.
