Annotation description:Background: This paper studies neurons of the thalamic reticular nucleus. The authors use a pharmacological and channel properties charaterization approach to show that fast GABAergic IPSCs in RTN neurons are mediated by GABAARs that contain the beta1 subunit.

Fig.1: Different populations of RTN neurons are recognized that show fast or slow channel decay kinetics.
Fig.4+5: Neurons with fast and slow decay kinetics can be differentiated based on their sensitivity to beta2/3 subunit selective agent loreclezole. Neurons with fast decay kinetics are loreclezole-insensitive and are presumed to have the beta1 subunit.
Fig.6: Cells that have fast decay kinetics express the beta1 subunit
Fig.7: Cells that express the beta1 subunit have fast decay kinetics

Authors conclude that fast GABAergic IPSCs in RTN neurons are mediated by GABAARs that contain the beta1 subunit.
