Annotated paper:Zhang P, et al. "Novel RNA- and FMRP-binding protein TRF2-S regulates axonal mRNA transport and presynaptic plasticity" Nat Commun. 2015 Nov 20;6:8888 PMID:26586091
Figure(s):Fig.5, 6
Annotation description:Fig.4: TRF2-S colocalizes with presynaptic mRNA's and FMR1 in the neuronal soma.

Fig.5: KD of TRF2-S decreases the axonal transport of mRNA's.

According to the authors the (rather small) subset of mRNA species which transport is regulated by TERF2of includes Rab3a and Aplp1, proteins that are known to regulate the intracellular transport of synaptic vesicles.

Fig.8: The KD of TRF2-S results in presynaptic defects in neurotransmitter release in hippocampal neurons. FMRP has a opposite role in this process.

Conclusion: TERF2 seems to regulate the axonal transport of a subset of mRNA's to the presynapse in an apparent interplay with FMRP. It must be noted that TERF2 seems to have a regulatory role distant from the synapse itself.
