Annotation description: | Previous data PMID:10875922: synaptic currents that inhibit cochlear hair cells is blocked by alphaBtx and strychnine. alpha9 nACHR subunit is specifically expressed in cochlear hair cells and is specifically targeted by alphaBtx and strychnin in these cells (alpha7 and muscle-type nAChRs that are also sensitive to alphaBtx are not expressed). This paper reports of the identification of the alpha10 subunit. alpha10 is expressed in cochlear hair cells and when co-epxressed in oocytes assebles into functional nACHRs with alpha9. These alpha/9alpha10 receptors have pharmacological properties that more resemble the cochlear nAChRs compared to alpha9 homopentamers. It is therefore generally believed that the cochlear nAChR is an alpha/9alpha10 heterpentamer. |
