Annotation description: | Pre-embedding immunogold electron microscopy was performed using a commercial antibody directed against Alpha1 adrenergic receptors (aa339-349, rb, polyclonal). Pre-absorption of the antibody with the A1 peptide eliminated the immunolabelling (data not shown, but mentioned in the text). A1 adrenergic receptors (A1ARs) were localized primarily pre-synaptically, but also in dendrites and spines (Fig. 3a) in the nucleus accumbens (NAc), ventral tegmental area (VTA) and the prefrontal cortex (PFC). The majority of the A1ARs were found extrasynaptically (not associated with the postsynaptic specialization or the peri-synaptic sites; Fig. 3c). Co-labelling with different markers revealed that A1ARs are localized to different types of neurons (TH - dopaminergic, vGluT1/2 - glutamatergic, GABA - Gabaergic; Fig. 4). |
