- Authors show N-cadherin labeling of the synaptic cleft outside of the area defined by the active zone and PSD (Fig.7E). The authors interpret this labeling as to originate from N-cadherin proteins intergral to the plasm membranes of the pre- and postsynaptic compartments. They do this based on the observations that 1) N-cadherin interacts with intracellular alphaN-catenin protein (Fig.8) and that 2) alphaN-catenin is present at the interface of the presynaptic as well as the postsynaptic plasma membrane at a region reminiscent of the N-cadherin area (Fig.7F; no double staining was used).
