Annotation description:Authors used a pSuper-based siRNA construct to decrease contactin levels of primary hippocampal neurons and observed a significant decrease in the number of dendritic protrusions, suggesting that cortactin plays a role in spine formation or stability. The remaining spines were positive for F-actin and PSD95. By contrary, overexpression of cortactin induced an increase in spine length mainly attributable to increase in spine neck. Interestingly, this effect was mimicked by the overexpression of a cortactin mutant carrying only the NTA and tandem repeat domains of the protein, involved in actin polymerization.
Overexpression of cortactin in aspiny inhibitory neurons also induced the small protrusions resembling filopodia, supporting the role of cortactin in spine formation.

- The data in this paper are rather corralational and strongly depend on the prior knowledge that "...cortactin binds to F-actin and affects actin polymerization...". However, the combined data on spine morphology and actin/cortactin localization, in my view, support the selected term 'regulation of modification of postsynaptic actin cytoskeleton (GO:1905274)'.
